Sunday, 2/24/08, Art at Sarchi

Sunday - 2-24-08
By now, the days were winding down until we had to head back to the U.S. Most of us were having so much fun that we could not believe that we had one day left. The penultimate day was as packed with activities as any other day. This was probably one of our most busiest days of the trip...

Checking out...How many of you returned your towel cards? I returned mine.

Eddie and Miles posing with their chaperone Hope...

David playing us a good-bye song on his zampoña.

Joy explaining how he bent a silver coin with his teeth and how he dominated in Water Polo.
On our 4 hr excursion from Punta Arenas back to San José, we stopped in Sarchi where we received a tutorial in how to paint the ox-cart design. The ox-cart design...Most of us did very well, I believe mine was the best, but I let a student win the contest. Painting is not as easy as I thought, and some of the students (Luke and Boom) can tell you that. I guess they never learned not to color, or in this case, paint outside of the lines. In the end everyone did a great job.
We learned to paint the ox-cart design in Sarchi.
Mr. Martinez got his head hand-painted.

Saturday 2-23-08, A Day at the Market and relaxing at the resort
David and the girls posing for the camera during breakfast. Kelly was nice enough to share her hash brown with Zulieka. Mrs. Marion is secretly stashing pastries for the trip to town.
Natalie, Kelly, and Zuleika looking at what the local merchants have to offer. Natalie, please don't touch!
Natalie!!!What did Mr. Bacon tell you about touching the merchandise...lol
Joy bought some Oak Lee's for a really good price...I wonder why?

Michael Joy ordering a snow cone. Cola, milk, and ice...We all agreed that it should get thrown out. Not a good mixture.
Various vendors selling authentic Costa Rican merchandise.
Uhhhh. Señora. There's a snake around your son's neck.
It's OK. That's his pet Cobra Commander.
WHAT A COINCIDENCE!!! The EHHS students recognized these two brothers who are twins that we met at the school yesterday. They were excited to see us and posed for the photo-op.
After the visit to town, everyone jumped right back into the pool for some more water polo.
EHHS students and the Wagner students vs. The French in Water Polo - apparently the French have a professional water polo league. Go figure!
Captains, shake hands and let's have a clean match!

Boom ready to defend his post.
Keith showing off his water skills. "I can jump higher than everyone in the water. That's a known fact".
If you're going to become true waterpolo players, then you've got to learn the five d's of water polo: dodge, duck, dip, dive, and dodge!
Poor defense.
"Ladies and gentlemen, prepare to witness the greatest happening in sport: sudden-death water polo". At the end of regulation, the score was tied at 97-95, according to the French point system. The game ended in a draw.
...and the foam begins. Where's Merrill? Nooo, Merrill. You can't eat the foam. By the way, where's Natalie Rose?
Kayak races. Girls vs. Boys. Who will win? You have to scroll down to find out.
EHHS boys Boom and Joy team up with Eddie from Wagner team up to make a formidable team against the relentless EHHS/Wagner female team.
The female team had it together after the first turn. They looked like a machine. They had the lead at this point...

...but they ran into a little trouble and learned a lesson in buoyancy.

The fellas did not do much better!
...cruising along. The guys struggling in the background. Joy is really gaining momentum doing the doggie paddle.
Neck and neck. The fellas are ahead by an arm's length.
...and the fellas cruise to victory.
EHHS/WAGNER 2008 POOL KAYAKING CHAMPS. Grand prize was 10,000,000 colones or the mystery box. Miles chose the mystery box and they ended up with these T-shirts instead.
Some students thought it would be fun to give Mr. Martinez a "do" since he's bald. This is the closest he'll ever get to an afro.

Friday 2-22-08 - Off to Punta Arenas and visit to elementary school

The EHHS and Wagner students playing soccer with the Costa Rican kids. They loved it.
Ari actually washed and brushed her hair today.
Shot of the school - It's amazing how the teachers are able to teach effectively and achieve with the little resources they have. It made a lot of us appreciate what we have and how we take it for granted.
Mrs. Marion refused to take her bracelet off after our stay at El Establo. It had been three days and started to reak. That is why none of the kids wanted to take a photo with her. Ari, the good samaritan and model student that she is, felt sorry for Mrs. Marion and decided to take a photo. Ari actually had to hold her breath for this shot.
We actually walked in during an English lesson. Most Costa Ricans know how to speak English.

Larson, Brochu, and Bajana doing research on the correlation of school uniforms and higher order thinking. I think we might see them for the upcoming year. If we do, you can thank those three.
Ummm. I just kicked the ball with my flip flops and I stubbed my toe. Now my toenail is going to turn black and fall off. Whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy?
